The Overtones UStream Facebook tab

The Overtones were planning a live Q&A session through UStream. To make the page more accessible and give fans advanced notice that it would happen I set-up a tab on the group’s Facebook page.

The tab is an iFramed page with the UStream video and chat functionality embeded. I also added a Facebook comment box to the page so fans can comment on the tab from their Facebook accounts.

This was my first chance to play with the new iFrame technique for Facebook tabs. This is the method Facebook encourages and it certainly is easier to edit a tab once it is set-up. Although it does mean that every tab you create will need to be set-up as a new Facebook application first. This is a bit of a pain in the arse compared to the old-school FBML method of creating really simple tabs. iFrames will make it easier to handle more complex scripts and it is much more convenient that flash content no longer needs to be clicked to activate it but I think I’ll stick to FBML for the simpler tabs while I can.
