NONONO Tunetrace Remix App for iOS

A few months ago I read about an innovative new app that mapped out sounds according to an image. I was fascinated by the TuneTrace technology and got in touch with the developers to explore whether the idea could be applied to an existing song.

After much experimentation with the QApps team they were able to create a remix app for the debut single by Swedish band NoNoNo. The app uses any photograph to create a unique version of the song ‘Pumpin Blood’ by rearranging the song. This is accompanied by a series of flashing lights that move along lines in the image, pulsating to the beat.

Ed Burton and Hamit Soyel were the lead developers from QApps, while Adam Daykin and Peter McOwen looked after agreements and terms for the collaboration on their end.

Other than overall project management and working alongside our legal and press departments, I was also required to write a lot of php, html, css and JavaScript to interact with the app.

Fans have the option to share their images in a dedicated gallery on the band’s website and then post them across social networks. I put together all the server-side code to receive and process image uploads from the app. I needed to process the images to rotate them according to exif data and create thumbnails.

I designed and built the gallery site based on the official website’s look and feel. With the obvious mobile and tablet appeal, it was vital that I made it a responsive design.

Due to the public sharing functionality, the site needed some moderation tools built in. I wrote a back-end system allowing administrators to remove inappropriate images from the gallery. In the unlikely event that one user is particularly offensive, I also included the option to block all uploads from a specific device.

The website integration worked seamlessly and gave the app a much wider social appeal.

While trying to explain the concept of the app to people, I found that it is best understood through a demonstration. So to promote it, I worked with Katia Kush from Electric Light Studios to create a promo video of the app combining motion graphics with footage I captured of the app in action.

The Pumpin Blood TuneTrace Remix app was released on the 19th November.
