In November 2009 Musketeer Records licensed the Native Noise brand for the release of ‘Native Noise Collection Vol.1 – The Seether Sessions’. The first in a series of planned releases to promote South African artists features the country’s most successful rock band. The Native Noise Collection includes acoustic versions of Seether’s biggest hits as well as interviews with the band. The album artwork features a number of my Seether photographs from various South African tours.

I launched a mini-site to promote the album and give fans access to additional content, like photographs, wallpapers and a desktop screensaver. The website is a very simple WordPress system with a custom built theme based on the album artwork.

Back in 2002, Paul Seele launched a radio show on the University of Cape Town’s campus station. Native Noise focused on promoting South African music with an ethos of ‘thinking globally by support locally’. During a two year run, Paul interviewed over 165 local artists, promoting the country’s top acts as well as showcasing upcoming talent. The Native Noise radio show ended on a high note with the release of The Native Noise Acoustic Collection, a free MP3 album featuring some of the best songs performed live on the show.

In November 2009 Native Noise partnered with Musketeer Records for the release of ‘Native Noise Collection Vol. 1 – The Seether Sessions’. The album features a collection of rarities by South Africa’s most successful rock band on a 2CD set available exclusively in South Africa.

Disc 1 of ‘The Seether Sessions’ kicks off with the new song, ‘No Shelter’, a b-side from the gold selling hit album ‘Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces’. The disc continues with recordings from the band’s iTunes Originals sessions, previously unavailable in South Africa. Seether discusses their career from 1999 to 2008 alongside rare acoustic versions of songs including the hits ‘Fake It’, ‘Broken’ and ‘Rise Above This’. Fans will also be treated to covers of The Beatles’ ‘Across the Universe’ and Cole Porter’s ’I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ (made famous by Frank Sinatra) performed in Seether’s unique style.

A second disc captures the band’s live acoustic performance at the Grape Street Club, as featured in the 2006 release ‘One Cold Night’. The session includes hit singles ’The Gift’, ‘Truth’ and ‘Gasoline’ as well as a cover of Pearl Jam’s ‘Immortality’, fan favourite ‘Sympathetic’ and the early Saron Gas song, ‘Tied My Hands’.

No band could be more apt for the launch of The Native Noise Collection. Seether redefined the way people perceive South African rock and thanks to local support they went on to achieve global greatness. This exclusively South African release will be a valued asset to any Seether fan’s collection.

At the end of 2002 Paul Seele decided to contribute to the South African music struggle. After co-hosting a rock show, The Alternative Current, on UCT Radio for a year and a half he chose to fill the gap left by the previous music manager, Nadia Neophetou. Paul replaced Nadia as the station’s music manager and inspired by Nadia’s love for local music decided to push the envelope with SA music coverage on 104.5fm. Paul started working on his new South African music show straight away, Ana-Paula de Almeida conceived the show’s name and the idea of it being Loudly South African and Native Noise was born.

Before the end of 2002 Paul approached the rest of the station’s management team about his desire to increase the station’s local music quota . On returning from the December vacation Paul was delighted to find that UCT Radio’s management had implemented a new programming schedule that now included a 1 hour lunchtime slot dedicated to South African music. The timeslot was named the Loudly South African Lunch and a team of individuals passionate about SA music was gathered to present the new shows. Paul See (his show name) presented the Tuesday & Thursday shows while Shorty Sure and Uncle Bexta hosted Mondays and Wednesdays respectively. The 3 presenters covered a diverse range of local music which was summed up on a Friday when the Double D team came in to count down UCT Radio’s SA Top10.

It didn’t take long for Paul See to build a good reputation for Native Noise. The show promised -and delivered- at least one interview with a local artist every week, current news on the SA music industry along with the week’s gig guide, and the ever-popular Papsak Pick of the Week. As difficult as it was to cram all of this into a very short hour Paul managed to enthusiastically deliver an engaging show twice a week.

In April 2003 another exciting feature was introduced to Native Noise. Andy Lund, vocalist for The Roswell Kings, wanted to try something new to UCT Radio. Andy had been a regular guest on The Alternative Current and Native Noise in the past so Paul was more than happy to try Andy’s idea. Thus on April 24th Andy arrived with band member Dylan Dalton and an acoustic guitar and the two performed the first song on The Native Noise Acoustic Collection. After Roswell Kings proved that it is possible to have good bands perform unplugged in UCT Radio’s minimally equipped studio Paul called in a string of talented artists to perfom live on the air.

By the 16th October 2003 Paul See realised that obtaining a degree from the University of Cape Town would lead his show to an unfortunate end. And so Paul made the neccessary arrangements for his final show. Uncle Bexta was kind enough to donate his 3 hour drive-time show to make it possible for Paul to host The Native Noise Four Hour Finale. Paul had Chiaroscuro, Plush and Freshly Ground in for interviews and towards the end of the 4 hour show The Roswell Kings and Arno Carstens performed live on the air. The show was riddled with previous Papsak Picks and songs recorded during sessions from The Native Noise Acoustic Collection. After a year of interviews with more than 40 artists and such a massive send off Paul struggled to walk away from UCT Radio….

Which brings us to March 2004 and The All New Native Noise. Despite not being a UCT student the radio station was thrilled to welcome Paul back to 104.5fm. Paul See was given 11:00-13:00 on Saturdays to host a bigger version of Native Noise. The show gave Paul the opportunity to focus on artists that are active in Cape Town on the specific weekends and a two hour show enabled bands to perform more unplugged songs on The Native Noise Acoustic Collection.

On the 22nd May, Native Noise was extended by yet another hour. The new show ran from 11:00-14:00 every Saturday. The first official three hour show was launched with unplugged performances by Fly Paper Jet and Boo! The additional hour allowed Paul to play a wider variety of local music and interview two bands per show.

By November 2004 it was becoming clear that Paul would be doing that graduating thing that almost destroyed his show in 2003. This time Paul would be graduating for good and leaving his student life behind. Unfortunately this meant that Native Noise would also cease to exist on Cape Town’s student radio station. So once again Paul planned his final big farewell.

After two years of inviting guests onto the show Paul had built up quite a collection of songs performed live on the show. So what better way to leave UCT Radio than to throw a party and give the listeners a permanent piece of Native Noise Memorabilia. Paul went through the archive of songs performed for the Native Noise Acoustic Collection and selected as many songs would fit on a CD. On the 25th November 2004 The Native Noise Acoustic Collection Free MP3 Album was officially launched.

Two days later Paul See went on the air for the last Native Noise ever on 104.5fm! He invited two very relevant guests onto the show to end of the year. The first guest was Chris Chameleon who was busy dealing with the departure of his former band-mates in Boo!. It was apt that both Chris and Paul were in a stage where they had to make decisions about where their careers would take them… hopefully both will have much success. Next Plush came into the studio and in the same way that they started Native Noise in 2004 they also ended it. Throughout the show Paul gave away pre-made copies of The Native Noise Acoustic Collection. The feedback from the listeners was phenomenal and one listener, Natalie Green, even stopped by the station with a farewell bottle of Amarula Cream.

Paul ended off the show by playing the Native Noise Anthem one last time and with that Native Noise was gone from 104.5fm. www.NativeNoise.co.za will remain online for people to download The Native Noise Acoustic Collection, listen to past interviews, learn about the show and view photos of the live music scene. Paul See says that his work for the SA music industry is not done, watch this space to see what else is up his sleeve.

With that in mind you’ll know that VOL are not a pop-rock kind of band. Frustrated by the lack of well-known or successful hard rock bands in the country they decided to form their own. VOL recorded one of their first gigs and have been distributing it for free. Now they are working on a studio recording that will be on sale in the near future. Your Presence Felt is the band’s first attempt at playing unplugged, the fact that they pulled it off shows that they really are a heavy band with the balls to try something new.

If you want a real taste of what Tonight We Die is about check their website and look for them on the Cape Town live music scene. The band made an appearance on Native Noise when they’d been together for less than a year. Since then they have proved that they have what it takes to make it in the SA music industry. Tonight We Die even had the honour of opening for The Springbok Nude Girls on the 10 year anniversary tour. The Song that they performed live forThe Native Noise Acoustic Collection is a masterpiece in an electric or acoustic format. FFF was the band’s first radio single and is still a crowd favourite.

Superfine started out as a four-piece band from Hout Bay, Cape Town. After releasing their EP, for the kid at the back, they downsized to a more efficient three piece outfit. Bassist and lead singer, Steve Mckellar is joined by his brother Andrew and drummer Richard Wouters. In 2003 the band opened for Tree63 on their Summer tour of South Africa. Following this Superfine solidified its fan base with regular gigging throughout the Western Cape. Just before heading to Los Angeles The View released their debut album, What you want. They had to change their name after discovering an LA band had already claimed the name Superfine. The first single off the album has received a fair bit of national radio airplay, including the No1 spot on UCT Radio’s Top30. The unplugged version of Something is a feel good addition to The Native Noise Acoustic Collection.

The band fuses rap-rock, hard-rock, reggae and afro-funk together in a powerful live performance. Soulja’s debut album, 21 Gun Slut, was extremely well received at the end of 2003. Songs like Plan My Attack, Girl Power & War/No More Trouble have received extensive airplay on UCT Radio and other good stations. Soulja are currently perfecting new material for a forthcoming second release. The band’s Native Noise performance in Oct 2004 included a brand new song. ATFUKSY was written briefly before the show, as a fun upbeat track it adds a great edge to The Native Noise Acoustic Collection.

Soul Proxy formed in March 2003 and in only three months the band had secured a record deal with Musketeer Records. Besides being able to record and release a brilliant album the deal gave Soul Proxy an opportunity that many SA bands would have killed for; the support slot for Seether’s South African tour. After the tour Soul Proxy headed into B# Studios (where many great albums have been recorded (Marlowe, Sugardrive, Fokofpolisiekar…). The self-titled debut hit the shelves in May and the first run sold out before they started any official promotions for the album. Soul Proxy have successfully managed to move away from being refered to as “The Band that supported Seether” into a powerful rock band in their own right. The Way was a huge hit on campus radio and even received some airplay by those known not to support local rock. The acoustic version is just Ewald playing guitar while Will sings and it goes to show that a quality song can be stripped down to the bare essentials and remain a great song.

Serving Suggestion has a contagious energy on stage that will get any crowd going. The three piece band has performed on a variety of stages in Cape Town. In 2003 their full length album Try Whistling This… was released to a very satisfied fan-base. Soon after the album was released Serving Suggestion’s vocalist Tim Smal made an appearance on Native Noise with his acoustic guitar.

Any music loving Capetonian and most well-informed South Africans will be offended if you try and tell them about The Rudimentals…EVERYONE knows and loves the Rude Boys! The Rudimentals are one of the few bands that can share the stage with any performer and get the audience instantly hooked into skanking. The 9 Piece band (10 including Zinzi the Boss Lady) launched their debut album More Fire in 2003 and have been spreading the ska-seed across the country. The Rudimentals were the first band to bring a brass section into the Native Noise Acoustic Collection, they proved that they can think and play out of the box by introducing the concept of unplugged skanking tunes.

On the 24th April 2003 Andy Lund (vocals & Guitar) and Dylan Dalton (Guitar) came into the studio and performed a live unplugged version of Seabreeze Drive-In. The Kings performed again during the last Native Noise of 2003. In September 2004 Roswell Kings returned to Native Noise with a full lenghth album. No Cure For Trying was released at The Independent Armchair Theatre on the 24th September 2004. Two weeks before the launch Andy & Dylan made an appearance on Native Noise to debut the album and play 2 more unplugged songs.

One of the songs performed on the 11th September was Johnny Stereo & The Underdogs. The lounge version of the song that you’ll find on The Native Noise Acoustic Collection is very different to the “machine version” found on No Cure For Trying. The album is in all good music stores – get hold of it as soon as you can!

Cape Town audiences will have seen Overgraze on and off over the past 3 years, in 2004 the band started gigging regularly and proved to have a dedicated fan base and an even more impressive stage presence. When opening for an unplugged Sugardrive gig they struggled to keep the mood mellow, Overgraze overflow with energy and enthusiasm. The band’s performance on Native Noise displayed that energy and even their spontaneity. While John and Marcus were performing John started a little tune called Crazy Parade, the moment is captured on the free MP3 album.

Find a Way is one of the older songs on The Native Noise Acoustic Collection. Niche made an appearance on Native Noise in October 2003 when they were organising themselves for stardom. Unfortunately as things were looking up for Niche their bassist Max left the band to spend more time with his family. Max was an important part of the band but losing him has not discouraged the rest of the band. They have every intention to re-group and keep playing. The song on the collection actually features the singing talent of the band’s guitarist Caleb.

In the past 3 years Mitsoo has worked hard to establish themselves as a musical force to be reckoned with. They have finally reached a point where people realise that being an all girl band does not make them a novelty-act. Mitsoo is a talented trio who just so happen to be female. They have a grungy punk sound that has developed a loyal following in the Cape Town scene. Their debut single, Suburbia, has been circulating local radio and MP3 websites such as www.samp3.com and www.purevolume.com. Now Bad Day will add to their online musical presence through The Native Noise Acoustic Collection.

On the 6th August 2003 Kelvin Declined got together to practice for their first ever unplugged performance. As the story goes they just ended up eating and talking kak. The next day the foursome arrived at UCT Radio for their first acoustic show and despite the previous day’s non-rehearsal they put on a brilliant show. Kelvin Declined are surrounded by interesting stories, like the rumour that in 2004 they were taken hostage whilst working in Dubai. The band was very quite during 2004 but reappeared on the live music scene with the addition of Lorne McGreggor (previously from My Latest Ex) on guitar. Look out for the new Kelvin Declined line-up at a venue near you.

One of my greatest moments in SA music was at BarGo in Durban in Nov 2001. Saron Gas was about to perform their last show in Durban before moving to the US as Seether. As Saron Gas would say goodbe, Jimmy 12inch was welcomed back on stage. The history of Jimmy 12 inch is long but essentially involves 2 break-ups. When the band re-formed in 2001 Gary Hiebner stepped up as the guitarist to take his place as the band’s new front-man. They didn’t take long to regain their fanbase and by 2003 Jimmy 12 inch had played across most of SA and put together their debut album 5 Star. In May 2003 the band was in Cape Town to promote the album and stopped off for a 2 song acoustic set on Native Noise. So Many Times was performed with Gary on vocals and guitar while Adam (the drummer) did backing vocals. As the oldest song on the acoustic collection this one has some sentimental value. More importantly since Jimmy 12 inch unofficially disbanded in 2004 the song is now a part of a “great SA bands that were” database.

Tim Kroon is an unbelievably talented musician. By the age of 19 he had already recorded a full album – entirely on his own! Kroon’s project is no ordinary solo work, he works in much the same way as Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor. Although being an inspired rock solo artist is where the comparison with Reznor ends. The Human Effect is classified as “Homegrown tech-trippy rock in hard digital. Inspired by the world.” His first single, Gravity, received a fair amount of airplay on UCT Radio, and opened the door to free studio time in RP Studios. The first few copies of The Human Effect’s EP will be available shortly and likely to become collectors’ items in the future. Kroon was recently one of 5 international students awarded the Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) music scholarship through correspondence at Berkleemusic.com. Kroon plans to have a live band going soon.

The Hogs have been Cape Town’s top punk band for about 6 years. The release of Oink in July 2004 has pushed them to the top of the SA music status ladder. Oink was launched at the Three Arts Theatre on the 5th July with support from The Rudimentals and Fokofpolisiekar. The Hogs agreed to play unplugged yet only George (vocals) and Ross (Trombone) arrived for the interview. When it came down to the actual live performance they broke down all stereotypes about punk music with a song that does not only have 3 chords. Porky Song has 1 chord, giving George and Ross the creative freedom to play the song backwards too. The song has had such a profound effect on the SA music industry that a few months later the Rudimentals came onto Native Noise and did a cover of Porky Song.

Fly Paper Jet are one of the most entertaining bands in the country. Their live performance is such an important part of the music that they chose to make their first release a live album. Fly Paper Jet Live was released in April 2004 and has been well received by audiences across South Africa. The band has performed twice on Native Noise once at the beginning of their career and again soon after their album launch alongside Boo! for the 1st official 3 hour Native Noise show. The song that you’ll find on The Native Noise Acoustic Collection is an entertaining story about love, lust and stalking. Be sure to listen to the interview from the 22nd May 2004 to find out what Friday Night at the Palace is really all about.

The album received critical acclaim and chart success with Love Song, Silverfish and Alison. When the band made an appearance on Native Noise in April 2004 they performed a full set of unplugged songs. It was difficult to select one song for the Native Noise Acoustic Collection but in the end Alison is a great song to represent this phenomenal band. The Dolly Rockers have been performing for the past 14 odd years and still maintain a uniquely alternative brand of music.

Boo! worked extremely hard to develop the kind of local fanbase SA artists dream of. Then they decided to work even harder and earn the fanbase that international artists dream of. Boo! have always been one of the most unique bands in the world, they even created their own genre – monkipunk. After 7 years, 876 gigs and 70000kms the band as we came to love it has decided to stop playing together. In December 2004 Chris Chameleon, Ampie Omo & Boney Leoni performed their final South African shows together.

In May of that year Boo! kicked of the first official 3 hour Native Noise. On a short trip to Cape Town the trio stopped off at UCT Radio and performed 3 songs as no fan could have imagined. Boo! have a reputation for doing the unexpected and on the 22nd May they outdid themselves. It was amazing to witness a band that has no guitarist performing a set with an acoustic guitar. One of the three songs performed was the previously unreleased Garden. With the uncertain future of Boo! this song will be a collector’s item for fans across the world.
